Breeders’ Cup

November 6-7, 2009

For the first time in the 26-year history of the event, the Breeders’ Cup World Championships, in partnership with the USO, will host American service members and their families for a day of championship Thoroughbred racing on Saturday, November 7 at Santa Anita Park. The day at the races will be sponsored by West Point Thoroughbreds, a prominent racing stable headed by Terrance R. Finley, a former US Serviceman and USMA graduate. The USO will have a dedicated hospitality area in the racetrack infield for 350 service members from the Southern California area and their families to enjoy the exciting day of events.

Veterans Day

The USO is proud to honor our nation's veterans. The following events will take place in and around Washington, DC:

Arlington National Cemetery: The Veterans Day National Ceremony will be held at 11:00AM at the Tomb of the Unknowns.

George Washington University: A Veterans Day Volunteer Event includes the Family Care Package Event at 9:00AM, Memorial Service at 11:00AM, and Guest Speakers' Commentary at 12:00PM.

Additional events occur throughout the day at the World War II Memorial (8:00AM), the Vietnam Women's Memorial (9:00AM - 12:00PM and 2:00-5:00PM), the National Marine Corps Museum (11:00AM and 1:00PM), the Vietnam Veterans Memorial (1:00PM), Mount Vernon Estate & Gardens (various events throughout the day), and National Building Museum (various events throughout the day). Join the USO and POV for the television premiere of The Way We Get By, the touching true story of three troop greeters from Bangor, ME. Haven't heard about this documentary yet? Here's the synopsis:

"On call 24 hours a day for the past five years, a group of senior citizens has made history by greeting over 900,000 American troops at a tiny airport in Bangor, Maine. The Way We Get By is an intimate look at three of these greeters as they confront the universal losses that come with aging and rediscover their reason for living. Bill Knight, Jerry Mundy and Joan Gaudet find the strength to overcome their personal battles and transform their lives through service. This inspirational and surprising story shatters the stereotypes of today's senior citizens as the greeters redefine the meaning of community."
